National Service Scheme (NSS)

Not me but you

National Service Scheme (NSS) has been introduced at Savitribai Phule Pune University since 1969 as a part of the academic programs and since then NSS has been functioning as a regular feature in the realm of our university education. The objective of the scheme is educational and service to the community, is the activity through which the objective is sought to be achieved.

In our college since 2002 NSS activities are going as a part of the college academic programs. It is a student-centered program in which various projects are implemented by the NSS volunteers in close collaboration with the community and thereby providing a vast scope for the student's interaction with the people. To start with, our NSS unit was consisted of 50 volunteers, now we have 200 NSS volunteers.

N.S.S has enriched the students' souls and minds. Through various students' programs, we cater to the needs of the community, as and when required. This also helps the students to communicate with the society. Students develop many skills and learn how to behave and interact with different kinds of people.

Some of our NSS volunteers are members of the "Pankhudi foundation" an NGO which works for children in the slum areas. Some are members of "Snehalay" an NGO which works for children. Working as "Police Mitra" during the Ganesh Festival is our iconic feature. At the same time we conduct various important activities throughout year like Road safety, paddy plantation, blood donation, tree plantations and so on.

We have formed a "Red Ribbon Club" in our college. Being a women's' college, every year we undertake the activity of hemoglobin and blood group checking through this club. Keeping in mind and understanding the need for safety of girls today, we arrange a 3 days' workshop of Dr. Rani Bang, a renowned Gynecologists.

Similarly various lectures of well-known personalities of the society, Police officers have also been invited for training and grooming our volunteers. Some of our students have also attended the State level and university level workshops, seminars. Some of the volunteers have passed primary level NRD/ SRD. Last Year we won and were placed 2nd at the State level quiz competition on Road Safety.

As per the guidance of Savitribai Phule Pune University, we had adopted a village, Mandavi (K) for "Vishesh Shramsanskar Shibir". We work there for 10 days for the development of the village. At Mandavi we took activities such as health check-up, eye check-up, gcc, tree plantation, Vermi culture etc. We have established a Library for students. With the help of Late Ramesh Wanjale, NSS dept. of our college provided road lights at Mandavi. We had adopted the village for 5 years. The village was awarded 'NIRMAL GRAM PURSKAR' as well as 'TANTA MUKT GAON' by the Government.

At present we have adopted Male village. In this village we undertook activities of inter-road development, general health check-up of all six ZP Primary schools and Secondary school, tree plantation. We further took a primary survey and created a data base for the Grampanchayat. Various cultural activities, group discussions, rallies, street shows were also arranged during the camp. We are trying to develop a Technocratic Environment and help the underprivileged people to develop themselves.
